Southwest Colorado Concerts kicks off their concert season with the San Juan Symphony
The San Juan Symphony will be performing their program “Rhapsodic and Exotic,” featuring Hungarian arabesques, flashy Russian dances, and the glorious Second Symphony of Jean Sibelius. Maestro Thomas Heuser, Music Director, will be conducting. Spotlighting their principal bassoonist Denise Reig Turner for Weber’s charismatic Rondo Ongarese, they journey over rugged and exotic musical landscapes, at the Montezuma-Cortez High School in Cortez at 3 pm on Sunday, October 7.
Denise Reig Turner is principal bassoon with the San Juan Symphony, Opera Southwest (Albuquerque, NM), Albuquerque Festival Ballet, the NM Performing Arts Society (Santa Fe, NM), and is second bassoon/assistant principal with the New Mexico Philharmonic/New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. She was also principal bassoonist and frequent soloist with the former Chamber Orchestra of Albuquerque for 18 years.
Denise has been on the faculty at the University of New Mexico since 1995 where she teaches bassoon, coaches chamber music and performs with the "New Mexico Winds", the artists-in-residence faculty woodwind quintet. She has performed orchestral, opera and chamber music throughout Europe, Mexico and the Southwest, and has taught master classes at numerous US colleges as well as in Mexico and at the Donizetti conservatory in Italy. She has performed at the Durango and Animas chamber music festivals (CO), the Abiquiu and Placitas chamber music series (NM), Church of Beethoven/Chatter (Albuquerque), and with the Santa Fe Desert Chorale.

7th Ave is a group of vocalists, brought together in 2016 by Chris Rupp, the founder of HOME FREE. From the mind of Chris Rupp comes a brand new vocal quartet that is ready to forge a new identity in the music world. Each member has a unique musical and performance background, allowing for exciting possibilities. Combining elements of pop, swing, rockabilly, country and more, 7 th Ave is aiming to re-invent and uproot the standard definitions of all those genres through their innovative arrangements and fun performances. This exciting group is coming to Cortez on Thursday, March 28, 2019, at the Montezuma-Cortez High School Auditorium, as a part of the concert series presented by SouthWest Colorado Concerts. The concert will begin at 7:00 p.m.
Members of 7 th Ave include the founder and director, Chris Rupp, who was born and raised in Mankato, MN where he spent his life surrounded by music with his mom as a professional musician. After graduating from Mankato State University he spent the next 10 years teaching privately and working to build HOME FREE into the sensation it is today after their 2013 season and victory on the SING-OFF. He has collaborated with artists such as Kenny Rogers, The Oak Ridge Boys and others and has released his own solo album.
Triston Rupp comes from the same musical Rupp family. Her degree from Mankato State is in Musical Theatre and she now pursues singing, acting and dancing in Los Angeles. She has been seen on Criminal Minds, Shark Tank and the film About Last Night with Kevin Hart.
Adam Bastien, from a small town in Michigan, began singing at the early age of 12, mostly in the form of duets with Celine Dion CDs. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan, and has traveled the world as a singer on cruise ships and has sung with several a cappella vocal groups including The Alleycats, Blue Jupiter and HOME FREE.
At this writing the 4th member of this outstanding quartet is yet to be decided.
California Guitar Trio - Friday, April 12th, 2019 - 7:00 PM
CALIFORNIA GUITAR TRIO – is Celebrating 25 years of making music together. Comprised of Bert Lams, Hideyo Moriya and Paul Richards, they have established a unique, personal connection with audiences. In addition to dazzling musicianship and interplay, CGT’s shows are full of captivating stories and humor that enable concert goers to feel like they’re part of the music, not just spectators.
This exciting guitar trio will be coming to Cortez on Friday, April 12, 2019, to play one of their unique concerts at the Montezuma-Cortez High School Auditorium under the sponsorship of SouthWest Colorado Concerts. The concert will begin at 7:00 p.m.
The California Guitar Trio has made a major global impact in their 25 year history, having served as the soundtrack of Olympics coverage, and programs on CNN, CBS, NBC, and ESPN. They have fans in high places too: NASA used their music to wake the crew aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor.
CALIFORNIA GUITAR TRIO’s lineup is truly the sum of its distinct parts: A Utah native now residing in Los Angeles, Paul Richards immersed himself in rock, blues, jazz and folk during his early days and while attending the University of Utah’s jazz guitar program. Bert Lams, originally from Belgium, graduated from the prestigious Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels, specializing in classical guitar. Tokyo-born Hideyo Moriya began his guitar journey with surf music and British rock, before relocating to Boston to study at Berklee.
Recently, CGT has been concertizing within a six-guitar format with the Montreal Guitar Trio, playing several concerts in the mid-west in 2014.
25 years and 1,800 gigs later, the CALIFORNIA GUITAR TRIO remains intensely committed to explore, evolve and communicate a wide-ranging musical worldview.
This is a concert for everyone – old and young – especially if one plays guitar!
Bandstand Boogie with the Diamonds - Wednesday, May 8th, 2019 - 7:00 PM
The fabulous foursome of 50’s and 60’s popularity, THE DIAMONDS, will be coming to Cortez Wednesday, May 8, 2019, 7:00 p.m., at the Montezuma-Cortez High School Auditorium as a part of the current series of concerts presented by SouthWest Colorado Concerts. Readers will remember THE DIAMONDS as a 50’s sensation with their top hit-tune “Little Darlin.”
THE DIAMONDS are a Canadian vocal quartet that rose to prominence with 16 Billboard Hit Records back in the day, and they have continued to perform through the years with gradual changes in personnel currently including Jerry Siggins, lead, Gary Owens, baritone, Sean Sooter, tenor, and Jeff Dolan, bass.
The Diamond’s biggest hit, besides “Little Darlin” was “The Stroll.” They won 1 st place on Arthur Godfrey’s “Talent Scouts” with the prize being guest artist for a week on Godfrey’s daily radio show, which then led to their first recording contract with Coral Records. TV performances included shows with Steve Allen, Perry Como, Vic Damone, Tony Bennett and American Bandstand.
The Diamonds were most noted for interpreting and introducing rhythm and blues vocal music to the wider pop music audience. With their 16 hit records, their Doo-Wop Hall of Fame, their Vocal Group Hall of Fame, their 20 million records sold and their soundtrack “American Graffiti,” The Diamonds are the perfect entertainment choice for audiences ranging from formal settings, like their appearance here, to the casual atmosphere of an outdoor stage at a fair or festival. They combine their great vocal harmony and musical instrument talents to provide an unforgettable, first class entertainment for our audience!
